Question:

Hey Rick. What makes an addict understand his choices affect others? We’re a both. We've done EMS Weekend. He's doing recovery work attending groups and 12-step. Example of problem: we were going to the beach when I mention making a bathroom stop. He's continues driving. Parking at this beach sucks, and now the one thing in his mind is: find parking! I mention again we need a restroom. When we park there's no restroom. This pisses me off. We go back to the car and my daughter has an accident. Of course! He didn’t consider us and now I'm going crazy at the fact I will forever be his mom. I hate to think this one characteristic will never go away. It doesn't benefit me or the kids. The only thing I can do is remove myself from this situation. I am disconnected from him due to these moments. It pisses me off especially when it comes to our kids. I believe he's a narcissist. I am ready to be done, but it's only been 6 months since EMS Weekend. I know it's about 18-24 months and may be longer for an addict. Would it be ok for my sake and sanity, to separate for a while? I feel stuck and don't get the healing time I need when all I'm doing is problem solving for him and his stupid decisions. My kids need a mom that will be there to take care of their needs. I feel like he's preventing me from that.
